Retry: Generally no.  When using detect magic to learn the properties of magic items, you can only attempt to ascertain the properties of an individual item once per day.  Additional attempts reveal the same results.  If you fail to learn a spell from a spellbook or scroll, you must wait at least 1 week before you can try again.  If you fail to prepare a spell from a borrowed spellbook, you cannot try again until the next day.

Special: You can take a 10 but not a 20 on Spellcraft checks.

  • Psionics: To properly use this skill to identify psionic powers, you must either have a way to detect powers or see some visible affect.

Time: It takes 3 rounds to identify the property of an item.  Learning spells takes 1 hour per level.  Crafting magical items is dependent on their craft skill.  Learning a spell from a borrowed spellbook does not alter your preparation time.  Identifying a spell being cast is a reactionary skill and doesn't count as an action.

CRAFT A MAGIC ITEM

Successfully creating a magic item requires a Spellcraft check with a DC equal to 5 + the item’s caster level.  Alternatively, you can use an associated Craft or Profession skill to attempt this check instead, depending upon the item being crafted.  The DC of this check can increase if the crafter is rushed or does not meet all of the prerequisites.  A failed check ruins the materials used, while a check that fails by 5 or more results in a cursed item.

SPELLCRAFT UNCHAINED

By taking the Signature Skill feat, you can unchain the following special bonuses:

  • 5 Ranks: Identifying magic items takes 1 full round, and the time required to learn a spell from a spellbook is halved.
  • 10 Ranks: You can identify magic items without using detect magic, though the DC is increased by 10.
  • 15 Ranks: Identifying magic items is a standard action, and the time required to learn a new spell from a spellbook is reduced to 1 minute per spell level.
  • 20 Ranks: Whenever you attempt a caster level check, attempt a Spellcraft check at a –20 penalty at the same DC. If the spellcraft check succeeds, you gain a +2 circumstance bonus on your caster level check.
