Auto Hypnosis (Wis, trained only)

     You have trained your mind to resist certain injuries and threats, as well as gain a few select benefits.


 Check: The DC and effect depend on the task you attempt.



RESIST FEAR

    In response to a fear effect, you can make an Auto Hypnosis check on your next round even if overcome by fear.  A successful check grants you another saving throw with a +4 morale bonus to resist the fear effect.


Retry: No.  When attempting to resist fear, you can only make one Auto Hypnosis check per fear affect.


Special: You can take a 10 but not a 20 when attempting to resist fear with an Auto Hypnosis check.  Keep in mind, you typically can't take a 10 under stressful conditions, such as combat.


Time: None.  This is a subconscious reaction to external stimuli and typically doesn't require a conscious action.


MEMORIZE

     You can attempt to memorize a long string of
numbers, a long passage of verse, or other particularly
difficult piece of information (but you can't memorize
magical spells or similarly exotic scripts).  Each successful
check allows you to memorize up to 800 words (or strange
sigils or numbers that would fill one piece of regular
parchment, though multiple checks allow you to remember
multiples of 800).  You always retain this information; however, you can only recall it with another successful Auto Hypnosis check.


Retry: Yes.  You generally know if you were able to commit something to memory or not.


Special: You can take a 10 or a 20 to memorize something with an Auto Hypnosis check.


Time: Auto Hypnosis allows you to memorize something by simply glancing at it and recalling it later.  A full 800 characters only requires a standard action to commit to memory via successful Auto Hypnosis check. 


IGNORE CALTROP WOUND

     If you are wounded by stepping on a caltrop (or similar obstacle), your speed is reduced to one-half of normal.  A successful Auto Hypnosis check removes this movement
penalty for a period of 10 minutes.  The wound doesn't go away — it is just ignored through self-persuasion.


Retry: No.  When attempting to ignore caltrop wounds, if you fail the first check you generally can't attempt to ignore the same set of wounds twice.


Special: You can take a 10 but not a 20 to ignore caltrop wounds with an Auto Hypnosis check.  Keep in mind, you typically can't take a 10 under stressful conditions, such as combat or chasing someone.


Time: None. This is a subconscious reaction to external stimuli and typically doesn't require a conscious action.


TOLERATE POISON & DISEASE

      In response to being poisoned or infected with a disease, you can make an Auto Hypnosis check on your next action.  A
successful check grants you a +4 morale bonus on your saving throw to resist the poison's secondary damage (if poisoned) or make a second saving throw (if diseased).  This use of Auto Hypnosis cannot be used against supernatural diseases or curses such as lycanthropy or vampirism.


Retry: No.  If you fail your Auto Hypnosis check or secondary saving throws to tolerate a poison or disease you can not attempt it again.


Special: You can take a 10 but not a 20 when attempting to tolerate poisons or disease with an Auto Hypnosis check.


Time: Unlike resisting fear or ignoring caltrop wounds, you must concentrate on controlling your own body to reject the poison or disease.  This use of Auto Hypnosis requires a standard action.


WILLPOWER

     If reduced to 0 hit points (staggered), you may make an Auto Hypnosis check.  If successful, you can take a normal action while at 0 hit points without taking 1 point of damage.  You must make a check for each strenuous action you take.  A failed willpower check carries no penalties other than failure — you can choose not to take that strenuous action.  If you do so anyway, you drop to -1 hit points.


Retry: Yes.  You may attempt a willpower check each round you attempt a standard action at 0 hit points.  Even if you fail an Auto Hypnosis check for the round, you may opt to take no action and attempt another willpower check the next round.


Special: You cannot take a 10 or 20 when making a willpower check with Auto Hypnosis.


Time: A willpower check is done as a free action at the beginning of every round it is used.


STABILIZE SELF

     You can attempt to subconsciously prevent yourself from dying.  If you have negative hit points and are losing hit points (at 1 per round, 1 per hour, or 1 per day), you can substitute a Auto Hypnosis check (DC 20) for your first normal stabilization roll to become stable.  If successful, you regain no hit points, but you do stop losing them.  If your first Auto Hypnosis check is unsuccessful, you go back to making normal stabilization checks each round.


Retry: No.  Once you fail your first stabilize self check, you cannot make another and must rely on normal stabilization rolls.


Special: You can not take a 10 or a 20 on stabilize self checks.


Time: None.  The use of this skill is a sub-conscious reaction to physical trauma and does not require a conscious action to perform.


AUTO HYPNOSIS UNCHAINED

     By taking the Signature Skill feat, you can unchain the following special bonuses:

  • 5 Ranks: You may retry Auto Hypnosis checks even when normally not allowed to.
  • 10 Ranks: You may ignore caltrop wound damage for up to 24 hours with a successful check.  Further, you may take a full-round action with a successful willpower check.
  • 15 Ranks: Upon making a successful stabilize self check, you bring yourself up to 0 hit points no matter what you are at upon making a successful check.
  • 20 Ranks: If you are able to use magical scrolls, whether through class abilities or Use Magic Device, you may memorize 1 scroll with a successful memory check.  This lets you memorize a spell via spell scroll and then cast it at a later date with another successful Auto Hypnosis check.  You can only memorize one scroll at a time in this manner, and once the scroll is memorized it is used up.  You may retain memory of this spell for as long as necessary.
