Like other campaign worlds, the Thunder Rift campaign has its fair share of unique monsters and enemies, as well as updated versions of some old classics. Here you will find the beasts and monsters that populate Thunder Rift, along with many of the standard creatures found in the Monster Manuals.
Within the Thunder Rift campaign, there are new types and sub-types of monsters, with the new subtypes affecting some of the monsters already published in other material.
Oni (subtype): Though all oni are evil creatures linked strongly to the Land of Darkness, not all of them are technically outsiders. A number of oni have entered the mortal world, such as the ogres, and have subsequently adapted to life in this realm. Others arrive through other unique means. Creatures with the oni subtype but without the outsider type cannot be banished or dismissed, but can be affected by other spells, items, and effects which affect oni. Unless otherwise specified, oni are always subject to the effects of elven jade.
Oni Qualities: The oni subtype carries along with it a number of abilities. Those oni who are outsiders have greater abilities than others, such as ogres. The following abilities are inherent of all oni:
Oni who are outsiders are stronger than their "mundane" kin and have the following additional abilities:
Spirit (subtype): Creatures that originated from realms beyond the mortal world, as well as those highly attuned to nature, have certain advantages. This includes many of the fey as well as creatures that are native to Tir na Nog and the Land of Darkness. This can also include some forms of sentient undead. Despite the name, creatures with the spirit subtype are not necessarily incorporeal. Spirits gain a +4 racial bonus against all enchantment effects except for those of other spirits. Spirits can sense any passages to their home realm (usually listed under Climate/Terrain) within one mile. Spirits are also vulnerable to certain spells (usually elven magic, they have learned how to commune with those of the spirit world) and effects which affect the spirit subtype.
As a general rule, the following creatures have the spirit sub-type: all dragons, fey, firbolgs and fomorians, all gnomes, all goblinoids (including blues, mites, and nilbogs), outsiders who are not oni, sentient, incorporeal undead, hengeyokai, and of course, the spirit folk.
